Parent Survey on the Effects of Digital Instrument on the Language Development in Korean Children

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to find out how young children¡¯s parents perceive the effects of digital instruments on the language development and social interaction of their children.

Methods: One hundred eighty-six parents participated in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of 23 questions asking how many digital instruments are used at home, how they are being used and the attitudes towards the effect of digital instruments on children¡¯s language development. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics.

Results: The main results of the study are as follow. First, 76.3% of the participants replied that their children use the digital instruments. Some answered that the children used smartphones more than other digital instruments and 70% of the participants responded that their children use the smartphones less than 30 minutes daily. Second, 65.4% of the parents answered that computer is harmful for their children, and 73.5% of the parents reported that smartphones are not helpful for their children¡¯s language development. The parents joined their children more often when using the smartphones than the computers. The parents are more concerned about the negative effects of the smartphones than the computer. Third, the parents worried about the negative effect of the smartphones, particularly their children¡¯s social relationships.

Conclusion: We discussed the needs of pervasive survey on the relation between the degree of using the digital instruments and language development. The results of this study that parents as a role model to their young children need to reflect on the use of digital instruments in daily life.
